Orthodontic treatment is a correction of faulty dental position and incorrect occlusion. Usually, teeth can grow in incorrect position (crowded, leaning to the palate or to the lip, twisted around their axis, curved or too far away from each other). This may result from early loss of teeth or due to inadequacies between the width of maxilla and mandible. Orthodontic treatment may be performed by using removable and non-removable devices.
Treatment of occlusion with trainers
Treatment with trainers is usually applied in case of early mixed occlusion, for 5-7 years old children when noticing certain parafunctions (breathing through the mouth, sticking of tongue between teeth) or consequences (for example, open occlusion). Although this technique requires efforts from our little patient, it actively corrects position and parafunctions.
Treatment of occlusion with plates
This type of treatment is applied to children of up to 12-13 years of age, during the so-called mixed occlusion period, when a child has several permanent teeth, but also has some primary teeth. It is also applied in case of early permanent occlusion, when a child has all permanent teeth. The plates are made individually for each patient. They are usually used in order to correct the position of some teeth, to expand dental arches or keep the place if a tooth has fallen accidentally. There are various constructions and functions of plates. It is important for the patient to wear a plate for as long as it is ordered by the doctor.
Treatment of occlusion with braces
After the end of mixed occlusion period (when the patient reaches the age of 12-13 years), the treatment with braces (brackets) is applied. These are non-removable orthodontic devices fixed to the surface of teeth. The braces are of various types: traditional metal, ceramic, sapphire. According to the fixing mechanisms, the braces are classified into ligature-free and regular. Treatment with braces systems is more effective than treatment with plates due to their property to “place” teeth into a suitable position. Treatment with braces is the most effective until the formation of jaws – until the age of 15 years. After this age limit is already crossed, the patient can show up at the age of 20 or 40 years – the duration of treatment will not be shorter due to that. It is also very effective if the treatment with removable orthodontic devices was applied before treatment with braces (plates or functional devices). In such case, the duration of treatment is shorter.
It is important to look after your teeth
Doctor orthodontist is highly focused not only on the treatment of dental anomalies, application of devices and their constructions, but also on the hygiene. In case of poor dental hygiene of the patient, e. g., his skills are not completely developed, the treatment is postponed until the patient learns how to take good care of his teeth. If the hygiene skills are not completely formed and orthodontic treatment is initiated, the plaque can start to develop around the device and may cause the decay (dental caries). Please note that decay is not caused by orthodontic device – it results from poor dental hygiene.
Cooperation with other specialists
In case of considerable inadequacies between the sizes of patient jaws, it may be impossible to restore the dental occlusion only with orthodontic devices. In such case, the orthodontist cooperates with maxillofacial surgeon. Surgical-orthodontic treatment not only ensures a beautiful smile to the patient, but also changes the facial features. Other specialists also come for help to orthodontist: prosthesis specialists (perform temporary or permanent dental restorations after treatment or during the treatment), oral surgeons (especially in case of noticing a principal lack of place in the dental arch and it is necessary to remove teeth), periodontists (create beautiful dental contour, open retained (stuck) teeth at the end of the treatment) and doctors performing aesthetic filling (restore the imperfections of dental form). Work in a team ensures maximum implementation of prepared treatment plan and guarantees a beautiful smile to the patient.
What is the duration of orthodontic treatment?
The duration of treatment depends on many circumstances: complexity of orthodontic anomaly, selected devices, individual data of the patient and previously worn orthodontic devices. The patient’s motivation and observance of doctor’s indications are also crucial. If the patient does not want to wear a device and perform doctor’s orders, the desired result will not be achieved.
Does the treatment cause any discomfort?
During the first days after the placement of braces, you can feel discomfort in oral mucous membrane as a result of scratching. However, there is a solution – we recommend the patients wearing braces to use orthodontic wax which reduces discomfort when placed on the surfaces of braces and after some time, when the mucous membrane gets used to braces, you will no longer feel any discomfort. During the first several days, you may feel dental pain, however, it is not the case for everyone. Those who wear braces may face increased salivation and slight lisp.
Does the result remain throughout the entire life?
After the orthodontic treatment with braces or removable devices, it is recommended to wear the retention devices allowing to maintain the achieved result. It is especially important for the patients that used to wear braces. After treatment with braces, a wire (invisible) is glued from the inside of teeth, which maintains the stability of aesthetic area. Trays or plates may also prevent from the movement of side dental segments. Retention devices are worn according to the doctor’s orders by gradually shortening the duration of wearing.
